Printer printing garbage

  1. HP deskJet 400 printer.

Just switched from Win ME to Win XP Pro. everything worked fine with
ME, now it's all garbled. I tried to install the software from the
floppy that came with it, it says the software isn't for this
hardware. then it installed the Win XP driver.

I went to the HP web page and it checked for my driver. It says I
have the most recent one. I disconnected the cable and did the self
print page, and that worked fine. then I reconnected the cable and I
    still get garbage.

Also, I just put in a new ink cartridge. Each time I turn on the
printer, the cartridge moves to the center like it needs to be
    changed.

    Any ideas?

    thanks

Suggest you remove the printer and drivers and start over using the
    drivers from hp's site.
