I've a Toshiba laptop, wireless, with WIN Vista. I've got it on my home
network which I run from a desk top with WIN XP SP2 on it and a HP
Photosmart 7350 printer connected to it via USB. I can add the printer to
my laptop, it sees it, I've it set to share at my desktop yet I can't get it
to print. I've also got another desktop with WIN 98SE connected through my
router, no problem printing from it.
I've checked the HP site for updated drivers, it says use what Vista
provides. FYI, I've uninstalled the printer from the laptop & reinstalled,
still no help other than laptop is seeing it and adds it to printer list
    Any solutions/suggestions out there?

    Willy,
When setting up your windows vista computer and it ask if local or
network, click it is local and go from there. I do understand it isn't a
local printer, but that worked for me on an Acer window vista and an xp
with the printer connected to it.

If I say it's a Local Printer, what port do I assign to it even though it's
not really using one on the Vista laptop?

ChooseAdd a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in
the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in
the \\computer name\printer of your desktop name ie. My computer's name
is bedroom and the printer name is HPdeskjet f300 so I typed in
\\bedroom\Hpdeskje. You have to name the port your desktop name.

    L.D.,
My desktop (with XP) is named BillDT and printer connected to it is HP
Photosmart 7350. Okay, I get on laptop (with Vista), follow your
instructions but I type in \\BillDT\HP7350 (I even type in HPPhotos and
other variants after \\BillDT\) and it tells me "Network Name Cannot Be
Found". The laptop is connected to network as I can access folders on my
    desktop.

    Bill,
I'll bet you don't have the right name in when you configured the new
port. I don't remember how I came up with the name for the port. I'm
thinking maybe I had to delete port name that came up default. Did you
go to your xp computer printer properties then port and see what it is
named? Type in \\BillDT\(then the name of the port or printer you see
for your xp)\ Now what puzzles me is when I couldn't get mine to work I
got the message "access denied" Not "network name cannot be found" as
you got. We may not have the same problem. Google something like vista
access denied to xp printer or some variant. Maybe since your message is
network name cannot be found, put that in instead of access denied. I
searched a lot and when I finally found about installing the vista as a
local printer, I found lots and lots of folks that had success doing
that. Let me know what you found out. maybe tonight I'll search an find
out more info. if don't have a solution by then. One more thought. Did
you have another computer networked to that xp before you got the vista?
If so you would use that same port name.

    L.D.,
Got it. I had the printer named HPprinter on my DT thus when I entered
\\Billdt\HPprinter , it worked though the printer is a 7350 series, HP has
no Vista driver yet and recommend using the closet in series that comes with
Vista thus I used 7200 cause next available was 7400. But I run test print
    & it worked great.
Thanks for getting me set up to print from my LT.

GOOD! Isn't that strange you have to install it as a local printer when
    it is actually not?

Yes that is strange. Wonder if it's a bug in Vista?
