I have installed macromedia shockwave on my machine and have some saved .swf
files from internet. Double clicking on these files the computer asks what
application I wish to open them. i can see nothing in the list relating to
shockwave so how han I get these files to play?

They open with "iexplore," which is the IE browser engine.

If the content was coded for streaming content, the .swf file won't have
the content. Streaming the data prevents recipients from stealing
    content.
