I tire of this mule-driven beast and wanna move up into the 21st
    century with a new PC.
I already have a good enuf monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Follows is
    what I plan to buy.

Any comments/suggestions/ pro or con very much appreciated.

PS, sorry about all the URL's and junk. This is the way I have it
    stored.

I tried to read it all, couldn't get through it. But NewEgg is your
friend. ASRock motherboards and AMD chips in general are good stuff. I'd
go with something faster than 2800, and make sure it's socket 939
(Socket A is like 10 years old). Find out where to cut the fluff, and
build the stuff. (I just made that up, please credit me in future writings).

All your links were for AGP, AGP has been drop'd for PCI express
    http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/Articles/Motherboard/PCI_Express.shtml

    Vista will require PCI express
    http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/09/07/vista_hardware_reqs/

At least with a PCI express slot your mother board will run what's
    available in the future.

Although I recommend any PC built today should include PCI-E, MS has not
    announced that Vista "requires" PCI-E.

    From eweek.com:

"Windows Vista provides the best possible user experience allowed by the
graphics capabilities of each computer," a Microsoft spokeswoman said in
an e-mail to Ziff Davis Internet. "As graphics support is still being
finalized, customers who plan to purchase new PCs should consider
specifying graphics cards with *AGP or PCI Express interfaces*, which
are most easily upgraded. For Aero effects video graphics cards should
support: DirectX 9 with an LDDM [Longhorn Display Driver Model] driver,
32 bpp [bits per pixel] color depth, and 64MB of graphics RAM."

I built almost exactly this system 2 years ago - it's still faster than
anything else I've got and I have no plans to replace it for at least
    another year.

My customer's primary requirement was for a quiet PC so I used a
Thermalright SK-7 cpu cooler with an 80 mm pabst fan (80mm run slower,
    quieter than 60mm fans).

I also bought a Compucase LX-6A19 that had a slot for a 120mm fan at the
front to blow over the hard drives. Also had rubber grommets for mounting
    the drives.

    Enjoy :)

What doo you think of Thermoelectric Coolers (TECs)? I bought some
from Melcor http://www.melcor.com just to play with, and they seem
    very cool. (no pun).
I'm thinkin' of building my own heat-sink from fine (.999) silver
since it's such a bang-up conductor of heat and using a TEC with it.

I haven't used TECs. Reading through the Melcor site I would consider
using them if I couldn't get the CPU cool enough. For quietness, I would
rather reduce the cpu power and use quieter, slower fans.
