Perl Or Patch?

Discussion in 'NZ Computing' started by Lawrence D'Oliveiro, Feb 3, 2011.

  1. Larry Wall wrote patch before he did Perl. While Perl was probably a much
higher-profile project (and certainly a bigger one), it seems to have been
eclipsed lately by newer scripting languages like Python and Ruby. Whereas
patch is, if anything, used more heavily than ever.

So which do you think will be regarded as the more enduring contribution,
    decades from now?

    Some Wall sayings from
    <http://orkinos.cmpe.boun.edu.tr/~kosar/other/lwall.html>:

double value; /* or your money back! */
short changed; /* so triple your money back! */
-- in cons.c from the perl source code

Down that path lies madness. On the other hand, the road to hell is
    paved with melting snowballs.
    -- in <>

echo "Congratulations. You aren't running Eunice."
-- in configure from the Perl distribution
