Is it actually possible to make Outlook work properly with IMAP servers
    like Thunderbird does?

i.e. sent messages can be filed in the server's Sent Items folder
    instead of Outlook's PST file?

When I used to use Outlook 2000, I had a rule that ran on sending a
message so it created a copy of the message in the IMAP Sent Items
    folder.

Outlook XP/2003 should have a similar rule setup if you use one of
    those.
