online photo share review/comparison?

Discussion in 'Digital Photography' started by Lee Breisacher, Dec 31, 2003.

  1. I've been trying to find out about all the online photo
storage/sharing/printing services (e.g. ofoto, shutterfly). There appear to
be a huge number of them, but I cannot seem to find a nice review/comparison
of them. I would love to see something that compares things like cost of
prints, cost of storage, amount of storage, length of storage, ease of use,
integration with local organizing software, etc.

In particular, there is one specific feature I would really like to have and
have not yet found it anywhere. I want to be able to easily add
captions/titles to my photos using local organizing software, then when I
upload those photos to an online service, the captions/titles show up in the
online album. This seems like quite a reasonable feature. For example, the
camera I bought recently is a Kodak which comes with their EasyShare
organizing software. It has a nice easy-to-use, quick-to-add captioning
feature and it is nicely integrated with ofoto.com (owned by Kodak), but
when I upload my photos to ofoto, there's no captions at all in the online
thumbnail views, and the captions that ofoto does support do not get
    uploaded from the EasyShare software.

So, does anyone know of (1) an online service that does support a "caption
integration" feature, (2) a review/comparison article about online services?

    Thanks,

    Lee

At dotPhoto the caption is taken from the file name and the longer text
description is taken from the EXIF information.

I think most services take the caption from the file name. I've always
found that to be the best way to caption a file of any kind.

    I use PhotoBox (UK based):

    http://www.photobox.co.uk/index.html

It's very good and inexpensive. Came top of a recent magazine review (which
I looked for but can't find).
