OE6 logs me into Windows Messenger despite being told not to

I have Windows Messenger installed because I occasionally use it, but I do
not want to be signed in every time I start OE.

I have been to tools/options/general in OE and unchecked "automatically log
onto Windows Messenger". In fact, I've checked and unchecked it, used
"apply" and "OK", restarted OE, even rebooted, but when it is in the mood to
sign me in it signs me in. As a result, my contacts appear in the OE
contacts window, and presumably I become visible to them as well.

I can't find anything in Messenger to solve this, and I don't know where
    else to look.

    Am I missing something?
