I am using a notebook hard drive (44 pin) to IDE (40-pin) adapter to try to
get data off of a drive. But every combination I try (slave, cable select,
master on its own IDE channel) either prevents the compter from booting, or
the computer boots but does not see the notebook drive. Anyone have a
    suggestion?

Try to go into the bios first and see if the HDD is recognized.
