Getting the fluff and dust out of the cooling system might be a first
step. There are cans of 'compressed air' sold for the job in electronics
shops, and if there are obvious screws for opening up the covers to the
fans then that can make cleaning easier. If the airways are clogged then
the cooling system can't work properly.

Power down the computer and unplug from the mains before you try to clean
    it!

It is possible for fans to wear out and that might make more noise if the
bearings are rattling or grinding. The fans can almost certainly be
replaced if necessary. But that is unlikely to happen on a machine only a
    year old.

Make sure that when the computer is running, the cooling vents are not
blocked - that can easily happen if you put the thing onto soft furniture
or on your lap; use something like a tray to seperate the computer from
the fabric so that air can flow freely underneath the computer. (You might
find a purpose-made 'lap desk' or something of the sort in a computer
    shop).

If the noise is actually coming from the Hard Disc, make sure your data
is backed up safely and get the machine looked at by a hardware
specialist; you will probably need a new Hard Disc - and soon :(( (But
that shouldn't happen on a machine only a year old unless it has been
    knocked about).

One note: Some hard drives do get louder as they break in. It has
nothing to do with reliability. Hard drives typically last 5 years or
more. That is the general minimum with normal use.

Well look who ended up on this newsgroup. Great advice the guy asks about a
cpu fan and you tell him about a hard drive.

Noisy as an annoyance is one thing, noise because the fan is
damaged is another. If it is failing or running slow or the blade
is off-balanced somehow and the CPU overheats, I would think your
BIOS would shut down the PC when the temp reaches the threshold you
have set. If it does, all your work would go down the drain. Worse,
the CPU might be damage by running hot for a long time. I say all
of this because my AMD Athlon fan started dying some time back and
it took awhile to get a new one and get it installed. I was using
the Windows Asus motherboard monitor utility to warn me when the
the CPU was getting too hot before the BIOS would shut me down or I
    damaged the CPU.

    Good luck in fixing this.
