    A newsgroup is a group such as this which is carried on a newsserver.

    A newsserver is a server such as news-server.xxx.rr.com which is how you
    are posting your message, which RR newsservice is provided free to RR
    clients via the newshosting newsservers.

    Are you looking for some other free newsserver not RR?

    You might check at Sebastien Willemijn's site and newsserver index and
    alt.free.newsservers. Also visit news.newusers.questions

    Newcomers to newsgroups should start here

    <http://computer.howstuffworks.com/newsgroup.htm>

    and here

    <http://members.fortunecity.com/nnqweb/>, the Official Home Page of the
    newsgroup called news.newusers.questions.

    x-privat.org has a free news server account (no binaries, 10 MB/day)
    as well as pay accounts

    Teranews.com and bubbanews.com have accounts with no monthly fee and a
    $3.95 setup fee and (at least teranews) a 62.5 meg limit/day and
    binaries. Both of these companies are selling access to nntpserver.com
    so the accounts should be essentially the same.

    Groups.google.com has the newsgroups via web browsers.

    Datemas.de and tornevall.net give out free accounts
