    1. If you set a newsgroup post as Important, will it prevent Thunderbird
    from purging it?
    2. If not, is there a way to keep read messages from being purged a la
    locking them as in Agent?
    3. Is there a comprehensive FAQ anywhere detailing using Thunderbird
with newsgroups, particularly Thunderbird for Mac OsX?

Um, 'purging' newsgroup messsages only applies to your local copy, and no, Mozilla or Thunderbird dont have a selective process when clearing your local get.
If you dont want messages purged from your local copy, then you can select keep all messages for the newsgroup account. Again, this only applies to your local 'get' the server will expire messages (or cancels) as specified for that server.

Um, there really isnt much of a FAQ for newsgroups per se.
Go to the newsgroup, read the group, post replies.
Each group may mandate (or suggest) a method of reply or format, such as bottom post, top post, interspersed, or mixed (non specified) and amount of editing in replies for that particuler group. Most groups are plain text only, tho there are a few HTML ones around.
The first rule of newsgroups, and sometimes the only rule, is 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do'. If the group bottom posts, then follow suit, if it top posts do likewise.

Some groups have FAQs all their own, on the does and donts of posting, and you should find a copy of the rules (or a post directing you to them) when reading the group (prior to posting)
Generally its a good idea to stay on topic for the group, tho there will be some topic 'drift' in all groups over time. Usually asking a question if its acceptable to post such and such in the group will give you directions.
