I have just started the 2261 course for Desktop Support Technicians and the
tutor is talking about setting up Domain Servers, Active Directory and
TCP/IP. I thought this course was about Windows XP. I have looked at some
sample exam questions and they don't mention setting up Servers or Active
Directory. Have I got it wrong. I have waited a long time for this course
and now I am not sure what I am doing.

    Hi Asher,

The majority of the course does focus on Windows XP. However there are
definitely aspects of Active Directory that you must know - there will be a
lot of issues revolving software deployment and other Group Policy issues.
There is certainly an important aspect regarding TCP/IP, especially as it
pertains to interaction with DNS, DHCP, and WINS.

However actually setting up Domain Controllers and Active Directory?
Something does not sound right. You do need to learn a basic understanding
of the technology, but you do not have to know how to create it.

I suggest you do the following:

    1. Review the course outline at
    http://www.microsoft.com/learning/syllabi/en-us/2261bfinal.mspx.
    2. Ask your teacher for a copy of the course outline and review it with him
    against that course outline.

If your teacher is an MCT and you are following the official Microsoft
Official Curriculum for the course then you might have veered off the path a
bit, and this bit of nudging may help.

If your teacher is not an MCT, then I suppose there you see the real value
    of taking sanctioned courses :)

Thanks for the information. The trainer is a MCT (and has the training
resources) and we are doing this part time course over one year, so I guess
he is just giving us some back ground info. The web link was very useful and
    I will read it carefully.
