    Just installing Win2kAS for a client.... ran windows update. 8 Critical
    patches and 5 general ones.... not bad. Then installed Win2kSP4.. now theres
    14 new Critical patches to be done.
    Ironic isnt it.. SP is suppose to fill the holes... instead creates another
    14. ;) And Id say at least 80% of those patches is going to create at least
    another patch each and so it goes on....

    Gonna be a long day....

    Gavin you should know better :)

    When you first ran WU, one of those 8 would have been SP4. The other
    patches (subsequent to SP4) will only install if SP4 is installed (most
    of them anyway). That's why you got the results you did.

    But you should know better than to even attempt this online (I hope you
    were firewalled) - as the proper way to do a 2K install and update is:
    * do the install
    * install SP4 you've dl'd already on a CD
    * install most of the patches you already have post SP4 on CD (main
    thing here is to at least install the MS03-039 (RPC / blaster worm)
    patch (or MS03-026 which was when it was first addressed).

    *now* you can go online and check for any remainders.

    :)

    yeah yeah.... hehe

    Oh well all done now... well almost. :)

    Soon as I get a new HDD Ill actually be able to keep all the damn SP's
    somewhere handy... putitng them on CD is useless with me, I keep misplacing
    the damn things or use them as coasters ;)

    It's not that the SP created 14 holes, its that the patches require that SP4
    be applied before they can be used to correct the fault.

    You are looking at it all wrong... the other patches may need some of
    the files included in SP4, they could have been a lot bigger :)

    recent Windows 2000 patches require SP2 or later to install and be supported
    If you're not on SP2 or later, Windows Update won't offer you patches for
    all vulnerabilities
    One of the first things that WU should've offered to install for you was
    SP4.

    #### hmmm.. if i'm to do a refresh install, would it be sufficient if i
    (1) do the install, (2) install a fireware app, (3) go online and do the
    WU? i'm worried that i might miss a couple of critical patches before
    going online.

    will.

    Yeah, that works fine (for XP). (no firewall client in 2Kanything)
