Is it possible to format the c drive via the ms-dos prompt while windows is
still open? If not what's the best way (Win 98)?

    Else

While with win98 it *might* be possible, it's not a good idea. You might get
stuck half way through left without a bootable disk.
Create a bootfloppy from within win98 or the dosprompt therein (format a: /s
will do) and copy over your most useful dos tools (fdisk.*, format.*) from
c:\windows\command. Save that one for emergency.
Then "restart to DOS mode" and do the job.

    Hi!
Use a win-98 boot disk. If you are running win 2000 or XP on a NTFS
partition you will have to use the FDISK (type: A:-\FDISK) tool to
create a FAT32 partition because Win-98 can't read (does not recognize)
a NTFS partition. After rebooting you can format the Partition (disk).

    NO!
Since the prompt feature is working through windows, formatting that drive
    is not possible.
As "format" wipes the drive clean, how is windows going to continue to
    operate?
Make a boot disk as directed from the help files.
Boot up with disk in floppy drive.
Once things stop, you'll see something like a:> on the screen.
enter the following with no quotes and the spaces: format c: /s
Follow the instructions given and read before entering anything.

    Best way:
    Create a Win98 boot disk
Control Panel > add remove programs > startup disk (create)
    Or download one at http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
    (Windows 98 SE OEM)

All the files you need will available, and you'll have access to your
    CD.

You must re-start the computer using the start-up installation disk for
Win98. You can then reformat from that disk.
