I am getting ready to take 70-290 for my MPC then probably go for MCSA.
I am hoping the 70-290 will demonstrate my skills so I can move to a new
company. Can somebody share a perspective on the job market for MPC's I live
    in portland, or area.

Eeeek... I think you meant to say MCP but here is my take on it (see below, I
was kind of ripped a new one since I admitted i have "zero" experience as
being a network engineer and trying for the 70-291)

I have many years of "computer experience" when i say that I mean 27 years
of building computers, networking companies, designing systems from paper to
computerized and everything inbetween. A few years ago I started at a large
law firm, they hired me without any certs and were very pleased with my
abilities considering they were a microsoft shop and all i had was novell and
just general knownledge. 2 years ago we had to start getting certified as a
big change to firm policy. I started out by taking my A+ (no studying, I
passed not a big thing since I had all real working knowledge) Next one of
the requirements for the firm was all tech's had to have MCDST (again a very
good cert for the job role)

I went thru a few rollouts and did alot of desktop support in the microsoft
world and studying with the ms-press books and online studying microsoft
offered. I passed the 2 tests needed for that with about 3 months of going
over materials and reading the books, Next I took up network+ and took a
classroom (week long) and took the test (again most of that was stuff I knew
from real life, some classroom and some books).

It got me thinking of going futher... So i took the 70-270 (first exam of
the msca track) I passed that easyly it was pretty close to the material of
the 70-271 and 70-272 (MCDST) I thought, what the heck Ill get some cbt's and
try the 70-290 (passed it but it wasnt pretty) I really had a hard time with
it (although I do daily backups/restores and odd jobs for the egineering
people). Well I tried the 70-291 and got my butt stomped.

My point to that long post is something I took from the responses I got, Try
to get some real world experience. I for one got my hands on a copy of
server2003 on a used computer and I am playing around with it. Who knows
after a few weeks, I might just go try that test again!

The first thing you need to learn is how to "spell" MCP. As for the job
market for cert-holders, do you have actual experience in a production
environment with Windows 2003? What kind of jobs are you looking for?
Are you expecting hiring managers to overlook a lack of experience if
you have a cert? The answer to these questions will help me answer
    yours.

Oh, I think he is correct in saying he was spanked, although rather
    mildly.

You weren't the only one replying, ya know. <eg>
