mozilla crashes (xft fonts in Linux)

Whenever I go to the website www.gtk.org mozilla will take a very long (2-3
minutes) time to load.  After it finally loads, it will crash as soon as I
move the cursor over the window.  This happens with several versions of
mozilla (1.7, 1.72, 1.8a2).  But, only versions with xft enabled.  I have
non xft versions which do not crash.  I am running xorg 6.70 and gtk 2.44.
Also, konqueror has no problems.  Mozilla with xft also crashes at random
other websites.  Anyone have any ideas why this happens?  Can other people
with mozilla xft enabled view this site?
This is a linux from scratch system.

    Thanks, TP
