Microsoft Windows Server Confusion

  1. Seems like Microsoft’s server efforts revolve around bringing out as many
variations on the same basic product as they can

Haven’t they heard of “modularity That’s how a single Linux distro can
address a whole range of roles, based entirely on what combination of
packages you choose to install. Adding and removing roles is as easy as
adding and removing the right packages; and you can change your mind at any
    time.

But no, that kind of flexibility doesn’t fit into the proprietary software
business model. They want to make sure that old cash register goes ka-ching
every time you want to do something new. And so the marketing department has
to divide up the customers into different segments somehow, so they can be
targeted with different products, regardless of how the customers themselves
    feel about it.
