Microsoft layoffs

  1. Microsoft laying off 1400 staff immediately, with more to come

Note that, even though they reported that PC sales were "flat", nevertheless
Microsoft's revenues are down. One factor is the continuing growth of
netbooks, where Microsoft has had to give away its fat gross margins just
    to stay in the market.

In other words, this is not a momentary hiccup, that can be blamed entirely
on the current recession. It's a pointer to a long-term trend.

  2. Windows client division revenue is down 8%, even though there was no
corresponding drop in overall PC hardware sales

Why? Because of increasing netbook sales.
