I recently purchased a Dell XPS m1330 with Windows Vista on it. this
computer has a built in microphone and when I try to use ventrilo it
seems that it can hardly pick me up. And when it does I am much too
quiet. I have tried boosting my mic by right clicking on the volume
thing in the taskbar, hitting recording devices, clicking on my
microphone array, and then hitting the levels tab. But in the levels
menu I can only make it quieter. I have the newest drivers installed
    for the microphone.

Have you found an answer to this question? I am having the same
problem and would appreciate the help.
