Hey Guys, What’s the real world value of this certification? I do not work in
the IT field or an office for that matter. What are the job opportunities
available? Also, on average what yearly dollar amount could be expected?
    Thanks. AM

  2. Hi Anthony,

If you are thinking of getting into the IT field then I think that MCDST is
not a bad place to start - it is certainly the easiest cert in the MCP
program, and it revolves around technology that you already know (Windows XP).

Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of studying to do unless you are
intimitely familiar with Active Directory, Group Policy Objects, Network
protocols, DHCP and DNS and more. However if you put the time in to do it I
think it is easy to obtain.

As for real world value that is a different question. It will certainly
give you a leg up as a first- or possibly second-level technical support tech
which will give you a respectable career. I would recommend that once you
have that foothold in the industry that you continue to work on more senior
networking certifications - either MCSA or MCSE on Windows Server 2003, or
Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist (MCTS) or Microsoft Certified IT
Professional (MCITP) on the upcoming platforms. That is where you will start
seeing real career growth and opportunities.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide!
