I recently retrieved a one year old Dell portable from my college aged son
who blithely downloaded alot of stuff from the internet.
The amount of spyware and malware was unmeasurable.
After multiple runs of multiple anti-spyware programs and multiple manual
registry changes I still could not undo the damage to Internet Explorer and
Firefox (there are many malwares out there that can corrupt FIrefox despite
    what you read).
Only a reformat and reinstall has worked.
I was so astounded that I ran multiple anti-spyware programs on all my
machines, instead of just the one that was usually used on that particular
machine. Ther results were again disheartening.
    It's a jungle out there . . .

I concur. I remove spyware for a living and at times I get frustrated when
I can't remove them but at the same time it's a good challenge that I like
    to bring on to myself.
