Machine won't update AV ... suggestions

  1. I have someone's comp at the shop to get rid of all the spyware and
viruses. It's been run through Trend Housecall, AVG and eTrust AV and
got rid of two viruses. Spybot S&D, Adaware, and HijackThis got a bunch
of crap off the machine. But I can't update AVG, Norton AV or eTrust, I
get error messages. I can't even download any version of eTrust, I get
"page not available" errors. Spybot won't update either. I've looked
through the hosts files and even moved them to the desktop to see if it
makes a difference, didn't help. I tried installing Mozilla and it won't
    go anywhere.

Otherwise I can get around the web just fine on the machine using IE,
it's about twenty times faster now than when she brought it in. Where do
I look next to see what's blocking all the AV and spyware updates?

WinXP, Athlon 3200, 512MB RAM, yada yada yada

Sounds like a possible CoolWebSearch variant.

    Download CWShredder from http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip
    and run it.

    Good luck
