After installing a new card and subsequently crashing my computer (wont
boot, even from floppy) I noticed a cable P8 loose. Is it supposed to be
    plugged into somewhere?
    Thanks for any advice.

Is this an older AT type m/b? If so P8 is one of the two power connectors
from PSU to m/b. P8 & P9 go in the same m/b connector, just make sure the
black wires are together in the middle.
