Some of you may be interested to learn that Ernst Leitz II, head
of the famous E. Leitz Optische Werke, developers of the Leica
camera series, and his daughter Elsie Kuhn-Leitz saved the lives
of hundreds of Jews and other victims of Nazi persecution during
the period of Nazi domination in Germany.

Leitz secured travel documents and provided travel funding for
large numbers of his Jewish workers and other victims, sending
them to the U.S., France, Britain and Hong Kong as overseas
"employees". His overseas offices provided further help to the
people after they arrived. His daughter was arrested for helping
Jewish women cross the border into Switzerland, and is also known
to have attempted to improve the conditions for Ukranian slave
laborers sent to the Leitz plant.

    See: http://zonezero.com/magazine/articles/leica/index.html for
    more information.
