On a laptop running xp pro sp2, with a wired, wireless and cdma (pcmcia
broadband modem) internet connections. (they are all used depending on
whether the user is in the office (wireless) out of the office, (CDMA)
    or at home (wired).

It can be configured to run from each of these, however, when the
computer disconnects from any connection, it resets the proxy settings
under LAN settings in internet tools, connections.

It re-checks the use automatic configuration script, and in the address
it will add a random character followed by a box character.

It will also re-check the "use a proxy server" check box and in the
address for the proxy server it adds the "^" character. This of course
makes IE unusable because even after you hook up to one of the internet
connections, you still get "page cannot be displayed" because it's
looking on the network for proxy server "^"

I have uninstalled/reinstalled IE through control panel, add/remove
    pgms, windows components.

    Any ideas?

    thanx
