The computer is set to a different country (Usually USA) than UK ..

Depends on the system, but generally Control Panel - Regional & Language
    Settings ..

Try telling him to use the shift key.....

If that confuses him, they're the ones with the arrow pointing upwards on
them (& there's 2 of them, so they're not to hard to find)....

Change the keyboard and language to "British English" in control panel
    then visit
    http://www.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyonder/getContent.jspx?page=h_email_mailbox

and set up some e-mail addresses
Your username is not secure if you use it on usenet
also see "blueyonder.support.mail" on your newserver

Is this a 'wind-up' the @ symbol is on the same key as ' ,
if this isn't a 'wind-up' use the "shift" key at the same time
    as the @ ' key i.e. shift+ ' ?
