Java troubles

    Anytime an applet (Yahoo! Games crossword, Java control panel) needs to
    (re)paint, Java's CPU usage shoots up to near 100% for a few seconds, after
    which my computer regains responsiveness but the applet is not completely
    drawn (though everything clickable is still clickable albeit invisible).
    Anyone else experiencing the same thing? I've had the not drawing everything
    problem since I starting using x64 and have been able to make do, but the
    CPU hogging is relatively new to me and is quite annoying. It may have
    coincided with me updating the JRE to 1.5.0_04, but I don't recall exactly.
