Is there a simple way to determine if a PC has two HDs or only one that is
partitioned. Simple being not having to open the case. TIA

When the computer boots the BIOS POST knows how many hdd/s there are, so
you can tell without even having to have a bootable hdd, floppy, CD, or
    USB.

It can't get much simpler/primitive than that, unless you are having
    trouble seeing the POST information.

If it won't POST you have to look inside.

Look in the Device Manager, under disk drives.
If there`s only one, but you have C; and D:, then it`s one
    drive partitioned into two.

Depends on the operating system. In XP you can focus your cursor in
explorer on a drive letter then right click and choose hardware.

If you go into the bios it "should" tell you how many hard drives are
    installed.
