Internet upload issue: Flickr/Lightroom

Hi guys, I've asked for advice on this issue on a couple of software-
specific forums but no one's been able to come up with a cause or
solution so I'm throwing it to you wise folks who have helped me in
    the past.

I have been using Lightroom 3.3 to transfer my images to an online
service. The connection failed a week ago so I started using Flickr
instead. Two days ago LR lost the ability to communicate with all on-
    line services including Flickr.

I can manually upload individual images to my Flickr account and I can
email them, but cannot use the automatic uploader. It gets to about
    50% done then hangs.

It all works fine on another PC (Win XP) within my network so I know
it's not to do with my ISP or my Flickr account. It's definitely to do
with some settings on my Asus laptop (Win 7).

Naturally I've turned off my Windows firewall and even uninstalled
    Eset. Neither helped.

System roll-backs to three days ago have been unsuccessful. The best I
can restore to is this afternoon, and even then it's not a full
    restore.

I've looked at my installed Windows Updates and the most recent is 17
    December.

HOWEVER, when I look at the restore points under System Restore I can
see a Windows 7 Critical Update was installed on 8 December. I suspect
this could be the culprit, but if it doesn't appear under Installed
Updates, how can I a) see what it did and b) remove it?

Anyway, maybe someone has a better clue than me (and the other forum
posters) on what could be the issue here and how to fix it.

    Thanks in advance for advice,
    Jo

Well, I have progress: when I coudn't install Google earth with
chrome, I did a search for the error code and found a page saying this
problem had something to do with IE.
Even though I NEVER use IE, I ran the reset function and hey presto,
    the uploader works.

HOWEVER, I still can't get Lightroom to authorize Flickr because when
I click on the authorize link, it opens up in MS Word so I can't log
    in. Very strange.

No, try removing and reinstalling Lightroom first.

    Cheers,
