    Hi,

Is it possible with a few words to say what steps ought to be taken to
safeguard a LAN with Internet access against illegal intrusion?

A good firewall between the LAN and the router. The router itself may
    have the firewall built in.

Don't connect the LAN to the internet.

If you have to to that,

Best - a special hardware firewall, if not then a Linux PC running a
firewall if not that most make do with do with.

A combined router / built in firewall.

On any PC AV , anti spyware , firewall.

Get a firewall and keep it active while you are online. Always delete
cookies and temporary internet files. Never have Windows remember your
password to online sites. Stay away from porn and gambling sites as they
always fill your computer with spyware. Havea good viruse program also
have and frequently run a spyware program.
