Industry tries to standardize DVD format
Big News Network.com Friday 15th April, 2005 (UPI)

Electronics retailers and U.S. movie studios are working to avoid a
clash between two emerging high-definition DVD formats that could turn
    off consumers.

On one side are Sony Corp. and its Blu-ray technology, supported by
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., which makes Panasonic products, PC
maker Dell Inc. and the Walt Disney Co.

On the other side are Toshiba Corp., and its HD DVD technology,
supported by NEC Corp., Intel Corp., Viacom Inc., Paramount, GE's
Universal and Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros.

Various parties want to avoid a repeat of the format war between
Betamax and VHS videocassettes two decades ago that kept potential
consumers from buying either option, the Wall Street Journal said
    Friday.

Success at reaching an industry wide consensus on a high-definition
DVD format would mean extending the DVD bonanza that has revived the
movie business in recent years. Failure would mean dimmer profit
    prospects.
