Image manipulation: Pre or Post Scan

I have a Minolta Dual Scan III for film scanning.

If an image (a slide) needs some manipulation (e.g., brighter,
lighter) does it make a difference to the quality of the final product
if that manipulation is done at the time of the scan using the scanner
imaging controls or after the scan using an application like
    Photoshop?

For example to make the image brighter, does the scanner actually
increase light intensity or just do the same pixel manipulation as
    photoshop?

  2. Hi Mike

My practice has always been to use the scan software
controls to get within a reasonable range of goodness,
then to follow up with Photoshop for the real fixes.

Reasoning: most scan software is a pain in the butt to
get final results with, but giving Photoshop a totally-outta-whack
scan means you'll be stuck with too many avoidable problems
    and artifacts.
