I would like to change one of these icons on Desktop to be easy to
    differentiate. How to accomplish that?

Right click on the icon. Choose "Properties."
Click the "Change Icon" button on the properties tab, and
it will present you with its offerings of different icons.
(You can also browse other files for icons).
