How can I get started

Discussion in 'Microsoft Certification' started by =?Utf-8?B?Q2hhcmxpZSBNYXJsb3c=?=, Sep 11, 2006.

  1. I am a 43-year-old teacher who wants to get into the IT field. The
certification process seems best to me.
But, since I lack an IT background or knowledge, what can you recommend as
the best certificate to start with?
    Thanks.

  3. Hi Charlie,

Though I do not entirely disagree with the A+ certification I think that it
is more geared to technicians than IT Professionals. If you want to start
with a good simple cert (it may not be so simple until you have done your
homework) is the MCDST - Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician.
Unlike the A+ and NET+ certs it concentrates on the desktop and Windows OS
(and applications on same) and unlike the MCSA exam you do not need to be a
network guru to pass, though you do need to dip your feet in the networking
    and Active Directory pool.

The two exams are 70-271 and 70-272. Good luck and let us know how you do!

Experience is more important than certs in this game. Be aware that you
would be starting from the bottom of the pay scale no matter what you
    mighthave read.

Having said that, at least getting MCDST will get your resume past the HR
filters. Try and pick up experience wherever you can, even if you have to
    volunteer.

My answer would be to evaluate what you mean by the IT field. IT is not
a single field, but it has many very vast sub-fields, and it takes
years of hard work to excel in any particular one of them. In other
words, what is it in IT that you really want to do?

When you have answered that question for yourself, you can decide upon
    certifications.
