Help Required: Cisco Catalyst 2950-48 Switch Problem

    I have 30 Nortel i2004 IP phones and a Nortel BCM400 connected to a
    Cisco Catalyst 2950-48 switch. Recently, with no changes made to any of
    the hardware, the 2950 switch keeps locking up - all LED's that have
    connected hardware show no traffic activity and the LED show's a static
    green. This is even the case on the Gigabit port that connects via
    cross-over to a Catalyst 3524 switch. It's like the 2950 has crashed -
    you cannot ping the IP address of the switch. The only way around it is
    to power off the switch - even this is not straight-forward, as it may
    takes a few attempts before it actually reboots itself properly. It's
    becoming very frustrating, as the "crash" happens maybe 2 or 3 times a
    day. Has anybody seen anything like this happening on a 2950 switch?

    Sounds like a broadcast storm. You may have a layer 2 loop, or
    portfast has been enabled on the wrong ports. Have you disabled
    spanning tree or enabled portfast on any of the ports?

    All FastEthernet ports (1-48) have spanning-tree portfast enabled. The
    Gigabit interface G0/1 is configured as a trunk. The thing is, this
    switch had been working fine for 3 months before this problem arose.
    That's what's confusing me.

    Based on your problem description, I would have to lean towards bad

    Hello, does sound like a broadcast storm. Make sure that all of the
    FastEthernet ports are still connected to the said Nortel IP phones.
    I've had many problems in the past where because I or my colleagues
    had not changed anything we assumed things ha dnot changed, and it
    turns out we were unaware of changes that had been made that caused
    problems. So make sure that there is not something else besides the IP
    phones plugged into those portfast enabled ports that might be causing
    a spanning-tree loop or just an increased amount of broadcast traffic.

    Also, can you console or telnet to the switch while it is locked? If
    so, perhaps there is something in the syslog that will help us find
    the source of the problem.

    Have a look at the various accessible counters when it
    is working to see if there is anything anomalous. I
    can't tell you what to look for exactly you will just
    have to see what there is that you might not like.

    This is saying that the VLAN1 interface (the CPU
    effectively) has had to drop 83
    packets without processing them because it is
    too busy. Why is that?


    Whatever the "Calhoun LED Proc" is, it is sucking
    up what would seem an unreasonable amount of CPU for
    a Light Emitting Diode process.
    Maybe it is a bad switch? Something wrong with the
    LED hardware?
    Not really very likely though.

    Why are you testing the latest software release?
    Is this a lab switch or a production switch?

    I would start with the broadcast level. The switch will
    have to process all received broadcasts in its CPU and
    maybe there are too many for it.

    What do the counters on the connected switches say when
    the problem is occuring. In particular how fast are
    they changing.
    What are the connected switches saying about the STP
    age time?
    What are the connected switches saying about STP TCNs?
    You may have to adjust the logging level.

    This is why I like Cisco kit, I have not seen any others
    that match their instrumentation. I am though not up
    on current practices of the competitors.
