For those who are bugged by having to have the CD in the drive

    from the readme file :

This tool allows you to run the Steam version of Half-Life 2 and CS: Source
instead of the retail one. The Steam version is CD-check free whereas the
retail is protected by Securom. You still need an valid steam account.

    Source code: http://hijack.absfree.com/hijack_hl2_src.zip (GNU GPL:
    http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html), Package:
    http://hijack.absfree.com/hijack_hl2.zip
To be sure there's no trojan or anything malicious in the package: download
the source code, check it, build it, and get hl2.exe from someone who bought
    HL2 via Steam.

I have it compiled and ready to go if anyone wants it. Works really well.

bummer. In this case, with the requirement for steam I don't see any
trouble at all with the no cd patch. But yeah, that link is dead. I have
the compiled files for those who don't mind being a little bit pirate-like.
You still need a steam account with halflife2 authenticated on your machine
for it to work so its not like your stealing the game.

What exactly are you doing? Who/what is steam?

Those with the game this will make much more sense. When you install the
game you have to install "steam" which is just an app that connects you to
an authentication process. When you play the game it connects to steam
even if you are offline and then loads the game so you still need that
account (which you get with your cd key).
With HL2 you could download a copy off stream and buy a key and it will work
but obviuosly you don't need a cd. If you buy the retail version you need
    the cd in the drive.

There have been a few comments lately about this pissing people off when the
real copy protection is the steam server. I found this fix so I thought it
    might be useful.
    Apparently not.
