  1. The European Library http://www.theeuropeanlibrary.org/ offers free
access to the combined resources of the national libraries of Europe,
including their photo collections! Some examples are listed below.

In short, The European Library is the most centralized and recognized
    gateway to European resources.

And more good news to come .... you can register now for free, and e.g.
    * save favorites for referencing at a later date
    * save session query history for referencing at a later date

    Example of Hungarian resources:

    * National Digitized Data Archives (NDDA)
Union database of Hungarian OAI repositories with the most varied
contents. It contains descriptions of digitized documents of different
types numbering about 95000 items: full text, video, audio materials,
picture, electronic document. Most of the records are linkked to the
digital object. The scope of NDDA includes literary works, periodicals,
filmographies, programs, films, music records, art pieces, research
reports, statistics, theses, essays, abstracts, state administrative
documents, etc. Harvested from public collections, libraries,
television- and radio archives, film-, audio- and photographic
libraries, scientific and scholarly, expert, press, public educational
    databases, state administrative archives, etc.

    Examples of Dutch resources:

    * 1975-2001: Dutch History Photo Commissions
2200 photo's from the collection of the Rijksmuseum: unemployment,
elections, asylum seekers, the Royal Family and more themes, taken by
    41 photographers.

    * The Niestadt photo collection of the Zijpe Museum
4000 photographs of the region of Schagen (North-Holland), mainly from
1940-1980, made by (press) photographers Willem and Lubèrt Niestadt.

    * Stork photo collection, 1868-1968
One hundred years of machine factory Stork in images. 10,000
photographs of machines and life around the factory.

The European Library was initially set up as an EU project. It is now
owned by the Conference of European Librarians (CENL), and financially
    supported by the participating libraries.
