GRE Tunnel+IPSEC+Keepalive

    All, Please check my logic on this and let me know which is correct.
    I have an ipsec encrypted tunnel between two routers. All traffic to
    be encrypted is directed to the tunnel interface via static route and
    encrypted to the other router over the tunnel. I wish to keep the
    ipsec phase 1 sa up, therefore to pass traffic over the tunnel to keep
    the ipsec ike sa active, I have two options:

    1. Use the tunnel keepalive, to exchange packets over the tunnel
    keeping the ike sa up.

    2. Use a routing protocol on the tunnel interfaces, to sends hello's
    over the tunnel keeping the ike sa up.


    I cannot get 1 to work, but 2 is working perfect using eigrp.
    Is this correct?
