Recent emails have mentioned classic 802.11b WiFi adaptors are now
proving hard to find in NZ,no doubt due to the rise of the superior
(but initially far more costly-although backwardly compatible) 54Mbps
    "g" specification.

After some sleuthing here in Wellington, several cheaper "g" USB
adaptors were eventually located, & early testing with a Genius USB
GW-7200U 802.11g (54Mbps) also indicates superior weak signal
performance compared with 2003/2004 era "b"(11Mbps)USB WiFi dongles.

This Genius "g" ran well with Netstumbler V.0.4, & readily detected
(LOS)WiFi APs ~10km away clear across Wellington Harbour when placed
at the focal point of our 12-15dB gain cookware parabola. See
comments/pix near end of our "Poorman's WiFi" pages =>

At their ~NZ$60 price (Ascent,TechSupply etc) these now look the way
to go for difficult longer distance LOS (line of sight)links, although
their 16dBm ( ~40mW) output power means you may well hear APs that
can't hear you! However at least you'll be able to detect signals not
previously known about & reposition antenna to a sweet spot to improve
    the link.

EXTRA: Hutt/Ak crowd Aquila Tech stock that "g" Genius at $49.50
    +GST. See => http://www.aquilatech.co.nz/static/39631800010.htm

NOTE: This posting in no way endorses the product or suppliers, but is
intended as an altruistic alert for potential NZ purchasers. You are
advised to verify performance & availability yourself.
