Gamera & the DVL-909

Discussion in 'DVD Video' started by Richard Alger, Sep 3, 2003.

  1. A month or so back, I bought a copy of "Gamera, the Revenge of Iris" on
DVD. I brought it home, tossed it in my ( 5 year old ) Pioneer DVL-909
player, and about 2/3 of the way through the movie, the picture started
getting "blocky". Pretty soon, it was un-watchable. I returned the disc,
and got another copy, only to find the same problem. I'm starting to
wonder now if the player isn't a bit picky. It plays laserdiscs without
a hitch, ( much better than my old LD player ) but it does seem to have
a problem with DVDs put out by smaller companies. has anyone hear about
problems of this sort with the Pioneer combi players? Is it time to get
a new player, and semi-retire the 909 to only playing my old LDs? Any
    advice will be appreciated.

Wow, that's one old player. I remember saying that was the only DVD player I
would buy because I just couldn't part with my laserdiscs and that was in
1998 or so. But cooler heads prevailed and I hadn't watched a single
laserdisc since I got my DVD player. I finally dusted off my laserdisc
collection when I got my DVD burner just so I could covert my Tex Avery and
    Bugs Bunny cartoon laserdiscs over.

Well anyway..yes I would think it's time for a DVD player upgrade. Most 1st
gen players do not work too well with new DVD's.

And it is interesting to note that I have NEVER had a laserdisc out of 100
totally fail....for DVD..yes. Although there are price benefits, I do NOT
think there are real reliability benefits.

My 909 started doing that -- related to layer change. Service was
    required.

The elapsed time display will blank out briefly on layer changes on the 909
so you can see if that is the case.

Otherwise replacing the disc solved the problem. I did find a Madacy disc
that would freeze up like that - on any player and I went back to Ken
Cranes and they opened several copies and they all did it at the sime time
mark so it is possible to be bad pressings.

I've only found 1 disc that wouldn't play in my 909. The discs that usually
cause problems all have worked fine.
