Flash IR focusing gives better result?

My Olympus FL50r flash unit on a E500 is always
more reliable in giving sharper images and I put
this down to the IR light on the flash unit
    itself.

As the ambient light increases the flash IR light
cuts out and the camera focusing takes over. But
the results are not as good even when the flash
    fires for fill light.

Is there any way to force the flash IR to work in
    daylight?
