Error Installing VIA/S3 Unichrome II KM400 driver XPPro Asus A7V8X-MX SE

Discussion in 'NZ Computing' started by Patrick Dunford, May 14, 2004.

  1. We have just acquired two new PCs fitted with the Asus A7V8X-MX SE
motherboard with integrated VIA/S3 Unichrome II KM400 graphics adaptor.

The computers were supplied with Windows XP Home edition preinstalled by
the OEM, which we upgraded by installing XP Pro over the top. During the
installation we were asked to provide the drivers for the graphics
adapter. The adapter installation from the CD supplied by ASUS failed,
and a separately downloaded set of drivers from ASUS's website also
failed to install. These installations used the setup installer included
    with VIA's drivers.

We also tried the Add New Hardware wizard to install, this also failed
with a Code 10 could not start device error.

The user was logged into the local machine as Administrator with full
unrestricted access to the machine at the time.

It has been suggested that custom software installed by the OEM might
have blocked the installation. We have a separate site license for XP Pro
full edition and are going to try installing that before returning the
computers to the OEM for warrantied remedy.

Below are the results of the installation from the installer's own log
files as well as the setupapi log entries.

Have you tried fully uninstalling the S3 graphics and running a
standard Windows VGA driver, then try installing the S3 driver?

The only one that will run on it now is the Windows one.

Remove driver/device from control panel. Goto registry remove the hive
key for the device in the hklm/system/ccc/enum sub tree. Check
permission on the hive key to ensure you have permission to write, else
"ivalid data" errors etc. Reboot and let windows detect the device
again. Cancel, don't search for drivers, don''t install drivers. Run the
full installer for the video card from the cd. Reboot. Windows should
    detect and install correct drivers.

And what happens if you uninstall whatever driver is currently there,
before attempting the new install ?

I don't think this is a "the data is invalid" type problem.

    http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=bi1t73$2ng$

That involves a permission bit in the registry for each PCI device,
and the permission bit has to be set to "Full Control" for a
    driver update to work.

Also, have you gone to Viaarena.com , to try to get the latest
version of the installer ? The VEN_1106&DEV_7205 seem to match
    the numbers in here:
