Epson ink jet printers occasionally come up with an error in the status
    monitor "unknown error..contact authorised service.."
This seems to relate mainly to the waste ink pads and the number of ink
drops fired over the printers lifetime.
Having looked at a number of printers with this error, I think the ink
waste pad lifespan is very conservatively rated (ie they are marked "full"
long before they have reached capacity. This may be either a Grand
Conspiracy by Epson to sell more printers or it may be the corporate legal
team in CYA mode, so the company doesn't get its arse sued off if the ink
pads overflow onto some litigatious Americans desk.
In the course of investiging a fix for this I ended up at a website that
has a free download of a utility that can, among a few other things, reset
the ink counter. I tried it today on a Colour 580 and it works fine. Go to
    http://www.sscig.com/epsone.shtml
Note: when the program is started, only the main window displays. Close
that and then right click on the icon in the system tray to get the useful
    stuff.
The utility is similar in function to the Epson one available from
ftp://ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson10281.exe, but the Epson one is Win98 only
