Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of THE BUTTERFLY (LE PAPILLON), COME
BACK, LITTLE SHEBA, THE ENGLISH PATIENT: COLLECTOR'S EDITION, JOHN
CASSAVETES: FIVE FILMS: CRITERION COLLECTION, LAMERICA, L'AUBERGE
ESPAGNOLE (THE SPANISH APARTMENT), THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION: SPECIAL
EDITION, and THX 1138: THE GEORGE LUCAS DIRECTOR'S CUT:

THE BUTTERFLY (LE PAPILLON) (reviewed by Amanda DeWees, overall
    score 98/100):
"The film is refreshing, never cloying. The story isn't told in a
calculated way; scenes that a less skilled director might have exploited
for their heart-tugging potential are related matter-of-factly, with no
swelling musical cues to evoke an emotional response."

COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA (reviewed by George Hatch, overall score
    95/100):
"Lola's support is matched by her darker fear of Doc's violent
outbursts, should he go on another binge. He's never physically touched
her, but his words have broken her heart: 'Please, Daddy, I wish you'd
hit me instead of saying those terrible things.' (Powerful stuff coming
    from 1951.)"

THE ENGLISH PATIENT: COLLECTOR'S EDITION (reviewed by Erick Harper,
    overall score 94/100):
"One can make the case that Almasy and Katharine are such thoroughly
unpleasant, unlikable people and their story so oppresses the viewer
that we desperately need Binoche's scenes. They are like a breath of
fresh air, allowing us to visit someone nice as a respite from the
tortured desert soap opera of Fiennes and Scott Thomas."

JOHN CASSAVETES: FIVE FILMS: CRITERION COLLECTION (reviewed by Dan
    Mancini, overall score 91/100):
"The director's style isn't shaped by technical incompetence or a
lackadaisical attitude, as it might appear on first glance, but by his
need to capture the sloppy, wild vitality of human beings in the act of
living. The result is a body of work whose freedom from the stricture of
Hollywood convention is either refreshing or maddening depending on the
viewer's willingness to give himself over to what Cassavetes is doing,
    what he's about."

LAMERICA (reviewed by Rob Lineberger, overall score 90/100):
"By the end of the movie you will know, perhaps even understand, what it
is to be a refugee fleeing to America. Americans should view this film
    for that reason alone."

L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE (THE SPANISH APARTMENT) (reviewed by Amanda DeWees,
    overall score 89/100):
"The premise for L'Auberge Espagnole sounds almost too much like a
multinational version of The Real World for comfort, but don't let that
put you off: L'Auberge is a great example of why scripted films are far
    superior to so-called reality television."

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION: SPECIAL EDITION (reviewed by Joel Pearce,
    overall score 100/100):
"I don't like making claims that are too strong in my reviews. After
all, anything I say here will be read by hundreds of people, and will be
here for years to come. There comes a point, though, when critics need
to throw caution to the wind. The Shawshank Redemption is the best
Stephen King film adaptation. It's also the best prison movie ever made.
In 40 years from now, when only a few films are remembered from the
1990s, this film will be one of them."

THX 1138: THE GEORGE LUCAS DIRECTOR'S CUT (reviewed by Dennis Prince,
    overall score 95/100):
"Put on your thinking caps, because this is one of those sci-fi
excursions; a cerebral exercise, to be sure."
