Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of BOPHA!, I AM A PROMISE: THE
CHILDREN OF STANTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, LIONEL HAMPTON: SWINGING AT HIS
BEST, MILE ZERO, SAMURAI X: REFLECTION (DIRECTOR'S CUT), SEA SPIES:
SECRETS BENEATH THE WAVES, SOUNDSTAGE PRESENTS LYLE LOVETT, LIVE IN
CONCERT, STAR OCEAN EX: THE INCEPTION (VOLUME 1), SYLVESTER AND THE
MAGIC PEBBLE AND MORE MAGICAL TALES, and WEST IS WEST:

BOPHA! (reviewed by Joel Pearce, overall score 85/100):
"It has a lean, smart script that doesn't oversimplify race relations in
South Africa during Apartheid. It is honest in showing that blacks were
treated unfairly, but it doesn't simply draw a line in the sand between
the two races, equating black and white with good and evil. Instead,
Bopha! shows an entrenched system of power and control, ever pushing one
race further down until they finally fought for their own rights."

I AM A PROMISE: THE CHILDREN OF STANTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (reviewed by
    Joe Armenio, overall score 90/100):
"Mr. Coates, the first-grade teacher, also provides a useful corrective
to the conventional wisdom when he says of his students, "Before they
are able to learn, they want someone to understand them...they want
someone to show that they care, and they love them." The statement is
borne out by the many shots of wounded-looking, anxious, fragile
children that fill the film, and it should be food for thought for those
who suggest that an educational focus on "self-esteem" is so much soft-
    hearted liberal idealism."

LIONEL HAMPTON: SWINGING AT HIS BEST (reviewed by Maurice Cobbs, overall
    score 87/100):
"Lionel Hampton: Swinging at His Best is a fantastic little DVD, an
unexpected delight -- doubly so, because while the name Lionel Hampton
may resonate with jazz fans, he's not one of the generally well-known
    bandleaders."

MILE ZERO (reviewed by Diane Wild, overall score 81/100):
"What might have scared distributors away, and what prevents me from
unreservedly recommending this film, is the loaded subject matter."

SAMURAI X: REFLECTION (DIRECTOR'S CUT) (reviewed by Dan Mancini, overall
    score 85/100):
"Viewed on its own, Samurai X: Reflection -- Director's Cut is a
narratively difficult but oddly satisfying tale of woe. Its story of a
once-celebrated samurai's fading away during the Meiji Restoration is
sure to please anyone with a passing knowledge of 19th-century Japan.
Unfortunately, the more you know of Rurouni Kenshin's backstory, the
    less compelling Reflection becomes."

SEA SPIES: SECRETS BENEATH THE WAVES (reviewed by Maurice Cobbs, overall
    score 89/100):
"I felt like spraying the house for Commies after it was over, or
scrubbing it down with Commie Cleanser (to eliminate annoying Red and
    Pinko stains)."

SOUNDSTAGE PRESENTS LYLE LOVETT, LIVE IN CONCERT (reviewed by Michael
    Stailey, overall score 86/100):
"Lovett's unique phraseology is so unlike most of today's vocal
stylists. With his deadpan, near immobile delivery, he's not much to
look at on stage, but he's one hell of a joy to listen to."

STAR OCEAN EX: THE INCEPTION (VOLUME 1) (reviewed by Mac McEntire,
    overall score 70/100):
"This is the same kind of story we've seen in other TV series and
movies, not to mention novels, comics, and yes, video games. Whether
future episodes will add new twists remains to be seen. At this point
it's an amusing series with a lot of fight scenes, but there's not much
    else here."

SYLVESTER AND THE MAGIC PEBBLE AND MORE MAGICAL TALES (reviewed by David
    Johnson, overall score 85/100):
"These discs may not be the hyper-kinetic Yoohoo-snorting ilk of the
current crop of kiddie animation, but what they lack in explosions and
spaceships they more than make up for in quality."

WEST IS WEST (reviewed by Russell Engebretson, overall score 85/100):
"This movie appears to be director David Rathod's only feature film, and
it displays some of the hallmarks you might expect from a directorial
debut: The budget is minimal, and the pacing sometimes falters, but the
enthusiasm of the cast and crew is almost palpable."
