Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of THE BEST OF RIVERDANCE, BEYOND THE
DA VINCI CODE, HIDE AND SEEK, HOSTAGE, THE JACKET, NEWSIES, THE PHANTOM
OF LIBERTY: CRITERION COLLECTION, REALLY BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM,
ROUGHNECKS: STARSHIP TROOPER CHRONICLES: THE COMPLETE CAMPAIGNS,
STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART (HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM), A VERY LONG
    ENGAGEMENT, and YOU I LOVE:

THE BEST OF RIVERDANCE (reviewed by Jeff Andreasen, overall score
    85/100):
"The energy and passion flooding over the stage from both the dancers
and the musicians is palpable, even on DVD (well, if your television's
big enough). Having never seen a live performance by the troupe, I can't
compare it to a live stage show, but I bet it's impressive."

BEYOND THE DA VINCI CODE (reviewed by Ian Visser, overall score 80/100):
"It's no secret that the history of Christianity has been altered,
omitted, recreated, and often deleted, to serve both individuals and
institutions. What Beyond the Da Vinci Code attempts is the dissection
of the theory put forth in the novel, and it investigates what is fact
    and what is fiction."

HIDE AND SEEK (reviewed by Mac McEntire, overall score 91/100):
"And then there's Dakota Fanning. Currently, she's the 'it kid' in
Hollywood. You know the one. The child actor who seems to show up in
every movie; the one that adult actors and directors compliment, saying
working with him/her is like working with a 30-year-old. Go back a few
years and it was Haley Joel Osment. Go back further, and it was Kirsten
Dunst in Interview with a Vampire. Keep going, and you'll remember names
such as Fred Savage, Drew Barrymore, and more."

HOSTAGE (reviewed by Joel Pearce, overall score 90/100):
"A thriller with no pretensions, Hostage is content to deliver exactly
what the audience expects. It's in no way destined to become a
perennial favorite, but it delivers two hours of tense action, fun
twists and turns, a solid script and a number of excellent
performances. In other words, it's a summer blockbuster released during
the wrong part of the year."

THE JACKET (reviewed by Patrick Naugle, overall score 72/100):
"Nothing is more disappointing than watching a film you had high hopes
for spiral out of control like a truck that's lost its brake fluid."

    FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/thejacket.php

NEWSIES (reviewed by Bryan Pope, overall score 75/100):
"Oh, how the kids in Disney's Newsies suffer. How they scrape for a
living by peddling papers to the masses and living in crowded boarding
houses. How they fight oppressive, capitalist fat cats. And how they
sing and dance in the street. A lot."

    FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/newsiesce.php

THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY: CRITERION COLLECTION (reviewed by Mike Pinsky,
    overall score 89/100):
"Still reeling from the success of Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie,
Luis Bunuel and his co-writer Jean-Claude Carriere decided to push their
luck by returning to the sort of fragmentary anti-narratives that made
Bunuel notorious in his early, more conspicuously surrealistic phase."

    FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/phantomliberty.php

REALLY BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM (reviewed by Lacey Worrell, overall
    score 90/100):
"The soccer techniques Beckham addresses are obviously the focus, but
the tidbits he offers about his own likes and dislikes, as well as his
remarkably humble nature when talking to the children, are what make
this DVD go far beyond what one would normally expect. The children are
captivated, and the at-home audience will be as well."

ROUGHNECKS: STARSHIP TROOPER CHRONICLES: THE COMPLETE CAMPAIGNS
(reviewed by Mike Pinsky, overall score 84/100):
"Taking its lead from the continuing storylines prominent in anime
shows, Roughnecks: The Starship Trooper Chronicles, was (and perhaps
still is) an anomaly in the world of American cartoons. Few shows, even
live action, have played out in such an atmosphere of unrelenting
    violence."

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART (HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM) (reviewed by Brett
    Cullum, overall score 92/100):
"The film is epic, spectacular, heartbreaking, fun, beautiful, and
uncompromising. You won't believe your eyes."

    FULL REVIEW: http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/humdildechukesanam.php

A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT (reviewed by Joel Pearce, overall score 94/100):
"War as a loss of innocence and destruction of men is nothing new in
films. That said, I've rarely seen it handled as creatively or
    beautifully as this."

YOU I LOVE (reviewed by Brett Cullum, overall score 84/100):
"Hopefully this will mark the beginning of more independent features
coming out of Russia, where for a long time (until the early '80s) most
films were produced and approved by the State. With You I Love,
Pandora's box has been opened, and now we can see if more gay filmmakers
will release movies from behind the former Iron Curtain and reveal what
has been hiding in the Iron Closet."
