drm-wmv viewer needed

i have been downloading some movies which are .wmv extensions but they
refuse to play. instead they launch internet explorer and go to microsoft
to look for a license. i assume this is digital rights management (drm).

these are old movies which should be free anyway so i don't know why they
were encoded with drm but it's such a nuisance for media player to keep
going to microsoft for licenses. half the time, it says the license
doesn't exist or can't be found but the movie still refuses to play
    without the license.

is there an aftermarket player that will play these movies without messing
with drm? something that will just play the movies and ignore the stupid
    drm requirement?

    thank you in advance.
