D50 vs D70 Image Sensor Performance

In a recent DP Review article, it states

"The only key difference between the D50 and D70 from an image pipeline
point of view is that the image processing algorithm has now been tweaked to
improve rendition of highlight detail (to clip less and have a softer
roll-off to the highlight). It's also worth noting that the D50's default
color space mode is IIIa which is still sRGB but is described as being
optimized for nature and landscape photographs"

I have a real problem getting images that expose to my eye's liking with the
D70 right out of the camera, so I use custom curves - a feature I dont
prefer. Does this clip of the article seem to you to infer that the D50 has
a tendency to create images that require less post processing and without
the need for custom curves to lighten the exposure of the D70 out-of-camera
    images?

Sounds like it has an automatic custom curve built in. Do they say if
this applies to RAW images? I would guess not.
