Crappy video card locks up

Discussion in 'NZ Computing' started by Patrick Dunford, Aug 17, 2004.

  1. Well I twigged that this 1MB Cirrus card in one of my other machines
didn't lock up up the machine at all, so I swapped the cards in the two
machines, and it is great to have the full acceleration enabled again and
watch the display updating so quickly and the computer doesn't locked up.

Before that I was getting at least one lockup a day and having to reboot
the computer and a real pain.

Just how common is it for this sort of thing to happen with a video card,
I don't see it that much in work which explains probably why it took so
long to figure out what was happpening. Card is a ExpertColor S3 3325
    with 4MB on it.

One big problem with S3 cards was crap drivers, classic was a problem
with lots of icons on the screen which required you to turn off some of
the acceleration functions to stop your system locking up when you tried
to load an app that used lots of them. I remember hearing at the time the
problem was that the crap drivers didn't know what to do when the video
card memory was all filled up and would just crash.
